Steve opened our end-of-year faculty meetings by noting, "This is...the essence of what makes this school so unique." It is true that our management style--with all policies defined by faculty vote--provides the sense of ownership that transcends so successfully to students.
In the past two days, we tightened structures regulating inter-dorm visitation, became less tolerant of recidivism and revamped the winter schedule to allow for more time outdoors.
If a Head of School's dream could come true, the faculty would represent a diverse continuum of experienced, invested professionals and young people whose energies and drive complement the wisdom of the elders. Tuesday's meeting included spontaneous testimonials honoring Chris Norris, who more than anyone, has shaped the evolution of policies and programs at Proctor. Below, Dean of Faculty Karl Methven (appointed in 1980) speaks as Chris listens.
