Cherished Moments

The third Thursday in April is National High Five Day, a holiday that goes all the way back to 2002 at the University of Virginia, and which was introduced to us by Dan Peterson's classes. Below, Dan greets his students at the start of American Lit:

The spirit of bon ami that swept the campus yesterday contrasted with the sense of loss and sadness felt by the community at the dismissal of two very popular students who violated school rules last weekend. Students spoke with eloquence and passion in assembly today, and called for signatures on a well-written petition for reconsideration of the verdict.

The love that binds so much within the community endures over time, and it was with great emotion on Thursday that we welcomed back two of the great Learning Skills teachers of the 1970s and '80s, Sally Caterine and Joanie Clarke.

Sally and Joanie were visiting first-year English teacher Story Parker, whom they knew when (as the daughter of Laurie and Richard Parker) she was a little girl growing up on this campus. Cherish your moments together!

People are dealing with disparate emotions.
Posters across campus invited us to "slap somebody you love."
And the impulse was hard to resist.
