Conflicting Vibrations
12/18/2003

The ironies of the holiday season are not lost on us here. While our culture grapples with the juxtaposition of crass commercialism and reverent spirituality, we--too--struggle with conflicting messages. At Tuesday's holiday program, for example, we preached peace on earth to students who were sprinting through a week of tests, projects, performances and sleep deprivation.

For some, the spirit of the holidays waits until we produce that 15-page lab report.

If you follow a star in the east from Proctor, you end up pretty quickly at the Lakes Region Factory Outlets. This, however, is the bustle in the lobby after an all-school assembly:

Others, including the students who breathed new life into WPRC (our recently dormant one megawatt radio station), seem more resilient. They're advertising shows featuring distinct genres including heavy metal.

So while some of us were singing Silent Night in the auditorium Tuesday night, others were calling in and requesting their favorite tunes by Iron Maiden, Black Sabbath, Guns N' Roses and Def Leppard. 88.1 on your FM dial. Oh: We're on vacation now, and you'd have to be within a few hundred yards of the station..... Peace.

Students came forward to light candles on Tuesday night with solumn reverence.

The holiday program was great. Now let's request some heavy metal!
