Antique Autos
12/1/2003

Interest in antique automobiles seems to have peaked during the 1950's, when yearbook photos documented an official club on campus. Now, an anonymous alumnus from that decade has gifted Proctor a gem of an antique to be raffled for the benefit of the school.

It is a 1931 Ford Model A 68-c "Cabriolet" (the early term for a convertible coupe) finished in Coach Maroon with black belt mouldings and fenders with vermillion wheels and stripe. Rumble seat. Assessed to a fair market value of $22,500, it will go to the holder of a $100 ticket at this June's reunion. Only 300 tickets will be sold. Here is the car at the annual golf tournament at CCNH on October 2:

This car was once owned by Hollywood Picture Cars, and appeared in several films driven by movie stars, but details of this fame are not clear. Still, it has storybook appeal.

Of course, for the cost of a couple of raffle tickets, I can guarantee you ownership of "Big Blue," the '92 Buick Century Century wagon my son drives around Waterville, Maine these days.....

Raffle tickets are still available for the Model A. E-mail Greg Samaha or call him at 603-735-6226.

Students over-reacting to the mirror-like finish.
Will Ames had no trouble starting the motor once someone reminded him to open the gas line under the hood.

This effort refers to Big Blue, which is pushing 200,000 miles and has a fair market value of about $500.
