Spring, Chapter 1
4/11/2009
Spring term has two distinct phases. First comes mud season, which has a tendency to linger. Then, suddenly, flowers bloom, grass is green, black flies swarm, and there's no time to accomplish all that needs to be done before finals.

This phenomenon will be exaggerated this year. First, the first chapter of spring is taking its time. Lawns are just beginning to green out, daffodils have yet to bloom, the weather remains cool and breezy.

Desperate, we act as if temperatures in the 50s are in the 70s. It's time for assembly.

The other factor that exacerbates the "two chapters of spring" thing is that we're graduating early, on May 30.

My theory is that the weather tricks us into assuming that there's lots of school time remaining, when--in fact--final exams begin in six weeks.

In assembly, our School Leaders remind us of the importance of respecting others in light of recent inappropriate behavior in a boys' dormitory.

Compounding matters is the fact that--compared to the winter trimester (when we have, say, 39 meetings for a class block)--we have only 30 meetings....a reduction of 23%. Ouch!

Jeremy shows Pedro some respect.

So, I'm predicting that when the forsythia blooms and the black flies bite, we're suddenly going to awaken to the fact that summer vacation is accelerating at us with speed.

We pour back to the Wise Center.

In the lobby, Frankie shows Brett some respect.

This brand of hop scotch is not all fun and games. It is an intense Spanish vocabulary drill, in which you have to translate the word to which you are hopping. So much to do; so little time!

The moment of realization/panic may be close at hand, but I see no signs of it.

Spring term offers some cool, single-trimester electives, such as surveying.

Wilderness medicine is another hands-on offering.
