A prolonged ice storm knocked out electric service across much of New Hampshire Friday. The village of Andover was fortunate to experience two relatively short outages; parts of town have gone three days without power. Across the state, 300,000 homes have been without power, and the Governor has declared a state of emergency. With few exceptions, classes met as usual on Friday. Brian works his laptop in a windowless chemistry room.
Given our extraordinary reliance on electronics for communication, our business-as-usual approach was surprising. The scene varied greatly from class to class, due to differences in natural lighting from room to room. A north-facing window on the lower story of Shirley Hall left this math class on the dark side.
The longevity of laptop batteries is critical. It's like an advertisement for the Energizer bunny.
You might expect people to raise window shades, but we're not very predictable....
