From Sublime to the Ridiculous
12/6/2008
This page will feature the most photographs in the ten year history of this site. In the beginning, download limited the page to two images. Today, I'll post 23. Let me know if you have problems, using the Comment feature.

This has been a week of amazing of accomplishments and silliness, and I'm delivering both. To start: A friend of the school--in a gesture to reward students for completing a fall trimester without a major disciplinary violation--has made an anonymous gift that gives every student a $20 credit at the bookstore, and $40 credit (deserved, I would say) to students involved in leadership.

Other good stuff is happening. On Thursday evening, another anonymous friend of the school sponsored a holiday gathering at Lake Sunapee Country Club that drew more than 100. The evening featured stellar performances by student vocalists and the jazz/rock ensemble.

Other good stuff: we are exhibiting three blocks of the AIDS quilt; two in the library and one in the theater. These pieces of fabric are like the Vietnam War Memorial on the Mall in DC, in that the medium, itself, creates intense emotion. Each block features six 3 X 6 panels--each created by the families of AIDS victims. Like the Vietnam Memorial, the power of art involves names....many names. The difference is that here, it is the content--taken close up--that generates the emotion. Here, Charlie guides a visiting family through the library.

Meanwhile, students volunteered to serve on behalf of the Red Cross, sorting holiday cards destined to military personnel. The New Hampshire Red Cross will process approximately 50,000 cards addressed to "Soldier in Iraq" or "Hero Serving America." Before they arrive at the Concord station, they're cleared for anthrax at Bethesda. Now, the job is sorting overtly religious cards (containing scripture, etc., that might not be appropriate for the recipient,) cards with anti-war sentiments, from the majority of generic cards.

Now we move from the sublime to the sensible. This is a biology lab studying cell structure.

These kids are doing calculations for a geology time line that will be painted on the walls of Shirley Hall.

Then there's this physics class, which hasn't started, so the SmartBoard can be used for SmartArt.

Geometry is fun. It depends upon whom you ask.

Getting sillier.  Tucker gives the thumbs up. Myles gives me the Vulcan salute.

Alan Mugglestone, (whose son, Nick '10, is doing the rabbit ears on his dad) may be only visiting for a few days from their home in Doncaster, England, but he knows how to land a place on Chuck's Corner.

Now it gets crazy. It's no wonder that girls' varsity hockey beat Holderness on Wednesday. We had the spirit!

But those fans didn't have the benefit of Red Bull.......

Henry and Oliver--just back from Ocean Classroom--introduced themselves to the community in assembly on Friday and announced the creation of a new, important student club: TECH DECK.

We're led to believe that flipping diminutive skateboards is good for our intellect, overall health and well-being. Meetings will be Tuesdays at lunch. I think I'll go...

Katie shopping in the bookstore.
Sophie, a senior from Mynster, Germany, is Acting School Leader while Duncan is studying at Proctor in France this winter.
William is stepping up to coordinate activities for student leadership this winter.
Director of Athletics Kathy Noble announcing that our champion football team has been acclaimed for Best Sportsmanship in the Evergreen League by league coaches.
Terry Stoecker and Haley introduce this year's local aid for Christmas fund.
Michael Littman and Terry Stoecker finish a mime routine depicting love found--at last.
One AIDS panel reads, "Manny I miss you. Thinking of you a lot. Who will put up the Christmas tree this year?"
The projector for the SmartBoard enables all kinds of art.
