For decades, we've been aware of the power of campus visits to the admission process. While every school claims to be unique, we receive unsolicited testimonials from visitors throughout the year, accentuating Proctor's special place in the independent school marketplace. The fact that we're on a first name basis happily distinguishes us from traditional schools, but it may be that the ethos is truly the product of our open-forum assemblies. The bell rings at 9:45, and we come together.
Everyone knows that assembly is going to happen, but no one really knows what is going to happen. Spontaneity rules.
Friday's confab featured a cook-off between two teams. Karl Methven, George Emeny and a ringer (Edna, our beloved baker) squared off against the team of Patty Pond, Eric Viandier and another ringer from the kitchen, Nate.
In front of approximately 400 students, faculty and visitors, they fought hard over three minutes, shredding coconut, slicing tomatoes and mixing exotic, novel sauces.
Members of the audience were invited to comment throughout the hilarious competition, with live microphones passed through the crowd. In the end, Eric Viandier's stunning peanut curry sauce became the focus of everyone's attention.
After assembly, we dash off for apples, crackers and peanutbutter at the Wise before the next class.
