The threat of thunderstorms forced approximately 1,000 attendees of Senior Dinner and Commencement into the Cage of Farrell Fieldhouse. The efforts of the kitchen staff, Development Office and the good people of Productions Inc. made these events run smoothly and successfully. The chorus entertained at dinner.
Celebrations began well before the Commencement processional Saturday morning.
For the past two-and-a-half years, Bill and Betsy Peabody have served Proctor as Chairs of the Board of Trustees with steady, sensitive leadership and love. They recited a Native American poem for the Invocation.
Human rights activist John Prendergast delivered one of the most powerful, tight personal Commencement Addresses we have ever heard at Proctor. His talk nailed five pieces of advice "from your friendly, neighborhood graduation speaker," finishing with "Don't sleep through the revolution," referring to those who deceive us with fear-mongering to justify worldwide atrocities and war.
John's speech triggered a standing ovation.
Finally, diplomas were awarded to members of the Class of 2007. Cait had trained Mike to execute a cool, high-low handshake.
Proctor graduations are notoriously emotional events, and Saturday's ceremony included awards to Arthur Makechnie (the Nance Barrett Community Service Award,) Tom Eslick (the John H. O'Connor '79 Award for Excellence in Teaching) and honorary diplomas to Bert and Dani Hinkley and Bert and Lee Carvalho.
