Once On This Island
6/1/2003

The spring musical is a long established tradition, and this year's production of Lynn Ahren's Once On This Island was another triumph for the theater company under the direction of Terry Stoecker and Michael Littman. Set on "the jewel of the Antilles" (which sounds like Haiti), the story is told of star-crossed lovers from two different worlds: a descendant of French aristocracy and the native girl who nurses him following his car accident.

The traditions, mythology and simple grace of the tribal peoples is conveyed elegantly, with the help of a sizeable children's cast.

When it was all over, Charlie Carpenter (with planter on his head) acknowledged fellow music teacher Kirstina Rasmussen.

The story is told as an oral tradition, in a world ruled by mysterious gods and fates.
Contrasted to the innocence of tribal life is the finery of French aristocratic culture....a world with arranged marriages.
The huge cast and crew of Once On This Island pulled off another dramatic triumph.
Michael and Terry.
