We're slipping back into a deep freeze here in the Blackwater River Valley, but spirits are warmed by one of the great athletic victories of the year: Saturday's come-from-behind 3-2 upset of Holderness by girls' varsity ice hockey. Ashley (middle, below) assisted all three tallies, and sent Tracy (left) in alone from mid ice for the eventual game winner. Also pictured (from left) are scorers Regina and Meredith, and goalie Amy.

No one can remember the team's last win over Holderness, and we lost at home to the blue bulls (?) 7-2 earlier this season, so the story line is all about team improvement and hard work. Here's Moritz--having commandeered my office during advisory--babbling with his sister in German, presumably with details about the game:

Athletic success requires dealing with injuries, and Mykin has a snowboarding bruise. She's exposing it in the art room, which is only right, because I enhanced the sick colors dramatically using Adobe Photoshop.

The captains' announcement in assembly was subdued, but the audience's response was not.
Chloe endures physical therapy in the training room before basketball practice.
John soaks his left ankle, which has been diagnosed "all messed up."
"Hey, mom. Did you hear about the game?"
