The Strength of Skiing
2/20/2006

A Brief History of Skiing appeared on this site two years ago. The strength of Proctor skiing has continued to soar since then. On Sunday, one hundred and fifty on the state's best young alpine racers came to The Blackwater as we hosted the Regional J3 Slalom, the third and final qualifier for this year's J3 Junior Olympics. (J3s are ages thirteen and fourteen.)

Course inspection:

A variety of factors have combined to advance Proctor skiing to a new level. A dedicated coaching staff, pre-season training in the French Alps and new commitment to our ski facility have grabbed the attention of hot, young racers (and the nation's leading vendors, too!)

Admission Director Chris Bartlett observes, "The fact that this quality program exists within a greater college preparatory community makes us competitive with ski schools for some top-flight racers." The truth of that statement is proved by Sunday's results. Qualifying in the third spot for JOs is Geoff Bonewald '09:

Also qualifying in the third spot for the JOs is Bridget Gillroy '09:

John Arnold took first for the boys, qualifying him in the number one spot for JOs:

Of 150 kids, 16 boys and 14 girls qualify for JOs. Proctor is well represented! Squinting into a bright future, from left: Geoff, Bridget and John.

With only 25 inches of natural snow--much of it washed away by 6 inches of rain and mild temps--Garry George's team made 664,000 cubic feet of snow at The Blackwater this year.
The new rope tow leads from the base to an elevation that accesses the 1500-foot T-bar.
