Recidivists, those who visit Proctor's homepage regularly, know that it presents anew every 48 hours or so during the school year. During the summer, with less material to report, the cycle slows to one or two pages per week. Today's manifestation goes back to the end-of-year faculty meetings, and the annual faculty party.

The germ behind Proctor's uniqueness is its relatively egalitarian/democratic management style. Nitty-gritty policies and programs are the domain of the faculty at large. Discussions of proposals (seconded at least one meeting in advance) precede open voting, at which pluralities are sufficient to establish new policy. This year, we renewed our commitment to health issues and programs, and empowered the Academic Dean's Office to consider improvements to existing programs. Afternoon activities now fall into three catagories: performance activities (teams, drama, dance, etc.,) active activities such as rock-climbing and kayaking, and other services, such as technoids and woods team. Ninth and tenth graders are required to take two performance activities each year; juniors and seniors take at least one.

Some votes yield great majorities. Other, tough issues result in split votes, sometimes including several abstentions. When it was all done, Edna's Cookies took on Sarah (Wilkins's) Smashers in softball. Pregame ceremonies included a moving, a capella rendition of the National Anthem, with teams saluting Old Glory from first base lines.

Below, the Smashers.

The quality of play may have been depressed by the throng on each team. In the end, despite the intensity (?) of the competition, a hearty handshake was shared by all, and we moved on to the barbecue dinner.

The quality of play (forgettable) was impacted by the number of players in the outfield at any moment.
Despite the loss, the captain of the Cookies had words of reconciliation.
