The mysterious writer Bruno Traven wrote a short story entitled Macario about a starving Mexican peasant whose life's dream is--just once--to have an entire turkey to himself. On Saturday morning, Derek Mansell's Spanish class watched a film version in his apartment while authentic corn tamales steamed in a double-boiler (setting off a sensitive smoke detector repeatedly.) Macario's hunger proved contagious, and we enjoyed these Mexican delicacies wrapped in corn husks, despite the lack of lard.
