Environmental Heroism
5/2/2002
The rest of the world observes Earth Day on April 22. For those attracted to conspiratorial paranoia, this cements the notion that environmentalism is a communist plot, because April 22 is the birthday of Vladimir Ilich Ulyanov--better known Lenin--the father of the Russian Communist Party. Whatever. A different Lennon (John) told us to "Think globally; act locally." We celebrated Earth Day today, in a manner that would please Lennon. A special assembly included faculty singing Pete Seeger protest songs.

The student chorus sang, too.

The highlight of the assembly was a series of Environmental Hero Awards presented by students to local men and women who are working to make a difference. The recipients were genuinely delighted by the whole program. Later, faculty sponsored workshops and activities, including a watercolor painting program that yielded this piece by Mel, Phoebe and Sarena entitled "Anti-Technology: Children Playing in Traffic."

Nationally celebrated naturalist David Carroll, author of The Swampwalker's Journal, is an Environmental Hero.
Organic farmer Rick Estes has been hosting Proctor students for the better part of 20 years.
Faculty over 40 were invited to croon "Blowin' in the Wind."
