Talent.
1/3/2001

In the radio biz, people refer to the person who sits at the microphone as "our talent" or "your talent." I like that, because it emphasizes the importance of skilled people to the success of an organization. Certainly, a successful school is one that wins the talent game by attracting and retaining the right employees. Part of the Fowler legacy was David's ability to attract talent. Students and alumni think of talented teachers, but there are those "behind the scenes" whose roles are critical.

I was sorry to read of Marilyn Bouley's death recently. Marilyn served as secretary to the Business Manager in the '70s and '80s, and was a strong, personable, and highly talented woman. This morning's obituaries included notice of Ervin Nelson's passing. Ervin--a very talented carpenter--worked for Maintenance from 1970-1985. A humble man with a terrific sense of humor, Ervin made Proctor a better school. Here is the sign in front of his house:

His obit mentioned accomplishments of which Ervin would never boast: his service in World War II at The Battle of The Bulge; the honor of being decorated with The Bronze Medal.
