As a member of the faculty your name comes up as Duty Officer once every six or eight weeks. The good news about being Duty Officer is that you get to run that day's assembly. You wield huge power. The bad news is that you and your advisee group have dish duty that day. It's really not that bad; in fact, some of us enjoy the bee hive of activity (everyone has a distinct role) of the dish room.

More good news: we compost most of our food waste now. Until this year, table scraps went into a "pig bucket" which actually fed local swine. Then, in a stunning application of recycling, we would pay the farmer to skewer the oinkers and roast 'em over a fire pit for a big special dinner. Those days are gone. Now we separate all of the meat and dairy scraps, and compost the rest over by the ski area:
