The way a business typically fills a position is to create a job description and then screen for the person who meets the defined need. That approach can deprive a community from attracting people with quirky passions, unique aptitudes and fantastic skills that a job description could never anticipate. If Proctor has the nation’s leading kayaking program, the best developmental ski jumping program or unparalleled land use management, it is not because we decided we had to have them. The programs grew because Bert Hinkley, Tim Norris and Dave Pilla are here, and their passion is contagious.
Jen Hill’s fiancé David Spear (here because of Jen, you might say,) is passionate about Tae Kwon Do, so we suddenly have a Tae Kwon Do program. In today’s assembly, students demonstrated moves, kicked through thick pine boards, and pretended to wale on one another.
Next year, Jen will take over for Karine teaching at Proctor in Segovia. David will go, and so--I suppose--will Proctor's Tae Kwon Do program.
