So there were these three lawyers...
The best thing to come out of this presidential selection process is that we are all using legal terms like "recuse" and "remand" with breezy confidence.
Local lawyer and jurist Bert Holland, PA Class of '88 (that's 1888,) was an inspiration to his young partner-- Massachusetts lawyer Whitfield Johnson--who served as a Proctor trustee for decades in Holland's honor. Both active, enlightened Unitarians, they stewarded a relationship between the school and the U.U.A. that began with John Proctor. Whitfield's law partner, Bill Hays, is now serving his second decade as a Proctor trustee in Whitfield Johnson's honor. Trustee-lawyer John Pendleton--who became an English teacher here in 1997--established the annual William C. Hays Prize Speaking Contest last year, in honor of Bill, and his extraordinary eloquence. Last night, 7 American Lit students competed for the prize in Holland Auditorium by delivering excellent, powerful speeches.
Sophomores Holly Blanchard and speaking prize winner Kyle Foley.
