One of the reasons Proctor is successful with such a high ratio of its students is that we have the nation's finest support services. We believe that tutorials started here in the late 1930's, and we know that Lyle Farrell was a personal associate of Samuel Orton, who advanced the science of reading (and reading "disabilities") in the 1950's. In the 1970's and '80's we made a transition from being known as the best school for LD kids to the best college prep school with formal support systems. This distinction helped us attract a critical mass of non-LD students, and thereby elevate positive attitude in admission screening. In those days, the Learning Skills department included tutors who set our program apart: John Schoeller, Alice Fowler, Sally Caterine, Ellen Stahlman, and the great Joan Clarke. Last night, at a reception in Newbury, NH Joanie looked fit and healthy as she lit into a layered salad and some pork pot stickers:
Great news: the Andover Mini-Mart has been sold! In recent decades, this establishment put the old "G Store" out of business and then enjoyed a monopoly in town. This is how it looked after assembly as kids lined up for permission to enter to buy sausage breakfast sandwiches and Jolt! soda (do you sense some distrust?):
The new owners are friends of Proctor, and will open next month with significant improvements and a positive relationship with our angelic kids....
Speaking of angelic kids, Dana Martin is a senior from Stowe, VT. A fine athlete, he was varsity soccer goalie, and is a power on our powerful roundball team. He is, however, lousy at doing dishes, as he proved very well yesterday.
