Professional Consultation
2/17/2004

Finding the right fit between an 18-year-old child and a college is tough; how much tougher it is to match a 13 or 14-year-old with the right boarding school! OK, if Johnny's a serious kayaker, he'll find Proctor, and if Mary's a ski jumper, she'll find Proctor, but how does an emerging adolescent know where she will be happy? Productive? Maximized as an individual?

These questions fuel the flourishing industry of Educational Consultants. Dozens of consultants visited us this morning. Their task was to capture a strong, valid set of impressions that will inform their referrals...all in two hours, which is approximately the same time spent by the typical touring family. After engorging on breakfast fats, they sat down and listened to a few of us define Proctor's mission and incredible market position prior to a tour of classes and assembly.

Steve spoke of the experiential quality of our curriculum, citing subjects like algebra and history....in which hands-on activity seems particularly far-fetched. It's easy to demonstrate through classes like boatbuilding.

Their tour took consultants to the typical scene. We want them to experience the truth.

Nicola's surprised to re-encounter the gentleman who saved her from her unhappy placement at another prep school, and steered her to Proctor.
One of the distinctions appreciated by visitors is the integration of the arts into everyday activity.
Joe '05 and Brooks Bicknell '77 encant as John Lennon as part of our Beatles Week observances.
Consultants spontaneously interview students before and after assembly. Which children would be happy or successful here?

Consultant: "Excuse me: Is that boy's hair blue?" Answer: "Yes, that's blue."
Bob Kantar, an old friend, can't resist experiencing what it's like to be a Proctor student.
Too soon, it's time for our visitors to get back on the bus (background).
They left very, very happy!
