The Cabin.
Carl Wetherall did us no favors when he announced at the opening assembly in 1935 that he was quitting as Headmaster. What he was trying to say was, "I'm really tired," and "The Board has decided to shut the school down." The Board had misread the scene, though. Lyle Farrell stepped up to become acting Head while he and Roland Burbank found and hired Halsey Gulick to start in December. Meanwhile, anxious parents withdrew 63% (45 of 72) of the student population. Halsey was a great innovator, and gave Ro Burbank permission to found and manage an extensive set of student-run experiential programs, many of which enrich Proctor today. The Cabin Club was a natural extention of Ro's Work Program, which had the boys building tennis courts (recently ripped up) and ski lifts...planting crops to be harvested in the fall for storage in the MLS root cellar.
Ro and the boys built a log cabin that stood for 50-plus years. Land Use Manager Dave Pilla organized construction of the new Cabin in 1991. It was visited by a ninth grade English class Saturday morning.
You can see the original cabin's fireplace west of the new building. The system of student government Ro crafted with his boys was an instant model, borrowed in detail by other schools, and the Honor Code set a new standard for student responsibility in residential schools.
