History Now

Proctor made history last week, when--with the click of one link--we emailed HTML webpages to about a thousand folks who barely know us. Everyone in the admission "pipeline" for whom we have an email address received the first edition of a monthly e-newsletter that brings them into the life of the school: academic....

...artistic...

...athletic.

In addition to dramatic images and straightforward, introductory text, the page provided multiple links to archived Chuck's Corners that complemented immediate subject matter. The recipient is invited to forward the page to others (which we get to track!), thereby sneezing the "idea virus" (Purple Cow by Seth Godin) that is Proctor to the multitude. The power is in the immediacy of the medium. These are not editions of an admission brochure. Rather, they say, "Here's what's happening here...." One section addresses student culture:

Links within the page bring the recipient into an interactive relationship with the school. Contribute to one of Proctor's blogs!
Due to anticipated shelf-lives, most admission materials drift toward the same, inherently unbelieveable message: we're so very, very good!
The real-time nature of electronic communication encourages honesty.
Rather than claiming near perfection, we're saying, "Here's what's just happened."
OK. This photo is from last fall's Ocean Classroom.
And I'm not sure if this is the Harvey Gamage or the Spirit of Massachusetts. This fall, we sailed the schooner Westward.
