Cotton Club
1/26/2002

Harlem's historic Cotton Club was the site of Thursday evening's alumni reception hosted by trustee Justine Alston '81. More than 60 grads and friends enjoyed a sumptuous buffet, slideshow, and welcoming remarks from Justine, Alex Estin and Steve Wilkins. Below we see Justine with her lovely family:

In her welcoming remarks, Justine spoke as beautifully as she did as School Leader 21 years ago. Her love for Proctor is genuine and deep, and we thank her for her generosity and kindness.

From left, Greg Samaha '71 (back), Alex Estin '83, Kate Shaughnessey Smith '91, Justine Alston '81, Justine's husband George Scarborough, and Keith Barrett '80.

Last night, a few of us took a cab from our digs in Times Square...

...down to another famous club: CBGB's (East Village at 1st St. and Bowery) to take in a show by fast-rising singer/songwriter Matt Nathanson '91. More than 200 sang along--having memorized his CDs. Matt had to reneg on his promise to chill with us after the show because he was dealing with hoards of adoring fans (barely any exaggeration here). Matt is about to be big....

Dripping with history, the club was the epicenter of the jazz scene from the late 20's, throughout the Harlem Renaissance, and on into the Ellington/Strayhorn years.
Our hostess offered an eloquent welcome to a happy throng.
Chris Baker and his parents.
Carlotta Segars '85, Danielle Segars '97 and family.
Steve Wilkins and Chris Baker.
Nowadays, most of my indoor photos are taken with a SONY 3ccd DV Cam using the still function. Some bald clown took this in a mirror.
