The games we play.
In 1949, teacher Bud Lauridsen and a gang of boys reconditioned a 1914 Ford as part of the Auto Club. Recently, Bud's son Pete, who is co-Chair of the Parent Association (PAPA) reconditioned it again. Together, Bud and Pete are motoring folks from game to game this Fall Family Weekend in the Ford. Here it is today, in front of Maxwell Savage 51 years later.
We consider ourselves to be ethically superior to schools that elevate athleticism over character in admission selection. This makes it tough to beat some of our sports-crazed neighbors. To compound the "problem," the school's popularity has enabled us to grow the ninth and tenth grades to the point that we are the youngest encarnation of Proctor in decades--if not in our history. We have only 80 seniors and 327 students. You do the math! We started this fall with a small varsity football squad, and with only a handful of real varsity types. Injuries to seven of these guys--including two quarterbacks--has prompted the cancellation of the rest of the varsity FB season. All of the Frosh and Sophs will continue as a strong JV team. Upperclass FB players are disappointed, but everyone agrees it is the right thing. Perhaps as an expression of support, kayakers played football today on Proctor Pond.
Across campus, varsity field hockey played a great game against KUA, cheered on by a crowd of parents and students, including some spirited shirtless soccer players.
