The sports pages of today's Concord Monitor are dominated by Proctor grads, as Jed Hinkley and Carl Van Loan '90 have just been named to the US Olympic Ski Team for Combined Nordic (ski jumping & cross-country racing) events. Nice picture of Carl:
Jed--son of Proctor teachers Bert and Dani Hinkley--met Carl Van Loan as a little tike, at The Blackwater where Tim Norris coaches jumping under the guise of "Andover Outing Club." Best friends, they played varsity soccer and dominated the prep school combined nordic scene for Proctor. Get this: another product of the Andover Outing Club was also named to the Olympics for cross-country racing. Here is Tim Norris (A.K.A. "Andover Outing Club") coaching a future Olympian at The Blackwater yesterday:
Never a jumper himself, Tim has the sport dissected with precision. In yesterday's snow, he groomed a bump on the hill like the one you ride a sled over and called out encouragement as little kids made their first attempts.
In this morning's paper, Carl is quoted: "I've always dreamt about walking in there (opening ceremonies) and having the Olympic rings on my back, seeing my parents in the crowd...seeing the Olympic torch....And who better to share it with than my best friend?"
