This is Mike Henriques, Proctor's Head of School, walking up to assembly this morning with Bruno, a senior who hails from Trois-Rivières, Québec.
Mike will be away for the next few days. He will be very busy, meeting with friends of Proctor, discussing how each one of them would like to change the world. The people he and Keith Barrett '80 will be meeting know the score. They are discussing the nature of an opportunity.
To some, terms like fund raising, advancement and development are regrettable aspects of independent schools.
"Too bad we have to ask people for money!" some might exclaim.
This discomfort with fundraising stems from a misunderstanding of the dynamic at play this week. As Mike and Keith share our vision for the future, we're not asking for anything more than consideration of the opportunity of a lifetime.
Gifts to Proctor are opportunities to make a difference in the lives of young people, and that is compelling, because the school is purposeful in the execution of its mission.
Years from now, Proctor will have another new dormitory, improved interface between Teddy Maloney Rink and Farrell Fieldhouse and expanded dining facilities. And years beyond those years, we will have new dreams and realities.
In the meantime, Mike's and Keith's trip is not about asking, but about educating people who already love Proctor about the opportunities they have to impact the lives of Proctor students.
