Family Affairs

The work portion of Fall Family Weekend is complete, and a Monday off is welcome. With more than 90% of students' parents here, the quantity of organization, hard work and volunteerism is staggering. Much of the heavy lifting is accomplished by P.A.P.A., a high-functioning service organization by and for parents. Hospitality carts (below, left) offer refreshments, muffins and fruit.

The schedule offered all-parent gatherings with administrators both Friday afternoon and Saturday morning. Student life and student health issues dominated the agenda, and spontaneous applause erupted when a new "immunity" system was explained. Voted in by faculty in June, immunity eliminates fear of disciplinary action when a student's life might be endangered (by, for example, alcohol).

A team of thirty-something student volunteers assist Bob Livingston and Dola Neill with the Toys-For-Tots Funwalk and related activities. Proctor is New Hampshire's largest T-4-T supporter, with a total contribution exceeding $35,000. Below, Bravo Company's Staff Sergeant Harrison gives Swayer a boost on the chin-up bar.

Sawyer's father is one of 170 New Hampshire-based Marines fighting terrorism in the Phillipines, and Bob presented Sawyer's mom a $500 phone card so he can talk to daddy. (Toys For Tots is a U.S. Marine Corps charity.)

This year's Funwalk netted $14,000 for local kids.
