The founders of Outward Bound noted that traditional academic processes failed to foster significant life lessons like cooperation and exceeding self-limiting assumptions. To experience this truth directly the whole faculty broke into small groups with names like "Slugs" and "Tadpoles" and backpacked to remote campsites on Proctor's 2300 property Wednesday afternoon for a night under the stars. We Slugs enjoyed spectacular views from our campsite on the prominent granite outcrop on the east shoulder of Ragged known as The Bulkhead.
Most readers will recognize Bert Hinkley (left), Tim Norris pointing, and Brooks Bicknell '77 (right). Yesterday, after pancakes and great coffee, we hiked down to Upper Adder Trail and on over to Elbow Pond for a whole-faculty picnic party. To cross Elbow Pond Brook, we used the new bridge constructed by Bert Carvalho's project period in March.
The water at Elbow is still in the high 70's. This was not a typical faculty meeting.
After lunch at Mountain Classroom, the groups presented somewhat rehearsed, silly songs, poems, and stories.
