Remembering Dolly
1/3/2003

Generations of Proctor students knew Dolly (Phelps) Smith as one of the proprietors of Currier & Phelps Village Store, known to us as "the G store." In addition, for more than thirty years she worked with Proctor Housekeeping, maintaining Carr House with uncommon pride and love. Dolly died Saturday at the age of 85. She was in our thoughts as a few of us toured lands owned by Proctor and Dolly's family yesterday. This duck box has never been home to waterfowl, but it's a dandy blaze, marking the trail in to Mud Pond.

Dolly was a great story-teller. As an admission officer, I made a point of introducing touring families to Dolly in Carr House, and let her charm us with stories of her youth. As a young girl, Dolly had served as maid to the Carr family. When Dolly married in the early '40s, Mrs. Carr held the reception in the west living room--now the common room.

To the east of the Phelps property, Adder Pond lies covered with snow.

This view of Ragged is from "Dolly's Field," immediately east of campus.

Maps (and just about everyone else) call it Hopkins Pond. Proctor people know it as Adder.
