Tribute to a hero.
6/3/2005

Sooner or later, someone like Oprah is going to do a major story on a local hero, Percy Hill. After his service in Vietnam, Percy moved to East Andover and ran a gymnasium in Franklin (before health clubs, fitness centers and personal trainers). Eventually, he became athletic director at Andover Elementary and Middle School. About ten years ago, he decided to start a unicycling club to keep kids busy after school. Under his leadership the Andover One-Wheelers quickly became the nation's premier unicycling team--with national exposure in Macy's Day Parades, the Fiesta Bowl and Disney Adventure Park. More than 500 kids have participated over the years. Last week, the One-Wheelers highlighted our 4th of July parade.

If you've ever tried riding one of these things, you know how difficult it must be to form hand-held circles-within-circles, stars, and single files.

Meanwhile, Percy is father to two extraordinary children who excelled at Proctor: Jen '88 and Jeremy '91. Jeremy and a few of his buddies founded the seacoast's dynamite R&B band "Percy Hill" (check out the website at percyhill.com) and Jen went on to teach Spanish at Berwick Academy, St. Andrew's School, Tilton, Gould, and starting in September....here at Proctor!

Percy Hill looks on with pride as the One-Wheelers do their thing.
