One of the attractions of a place such as this is the healthy environment. Here, miles from the ills of urban America, we breathe clean, cold January air, and ski on fresh powdery snows that fall so frequently at this blessed latitude. Reality check: It has been raining hard in Andover; high temperatures are in the 40s daily, and approximately one hundred students are sick with influenza, respiratory infections and nasty bacterial bugs. You can opt for immunization at lunch.
With campuses in Spain and France, and groups touring southern Texas and studying on the west coast of Costa Rica Rica, Proctor is much more than one place. Maybe it's a state of mind. Let's get out of this sick ward and visit Proctor in Aix-en-Provence:
Our crowd in Aix has only been there two weeks, but they've settled in with host families and are struggling--not with influenza--but with language.
Proctor in Spain poses in front of Segovia's spectacular Roman aquaduct:
Meanwhile, we must be closing in on the 100th Mountain Classroom expedition. This winter's group is now in southern Texas, starting intensive studies of border issues, while camping, working and playing in environments ranging from roadside stops to remote deserts.
If someone asks, "How are things at Proctor?" we need to respond, "Depends on where you are...."
