Adventures on the high seas.
7/12/2000

We started from Marblehead at 7 aboard Wild Horses and sister ship White Wings, and made it to Boston's outer harbor in no time with a freshening northwesterly breeze gusting to 20.

We were the only racing boats anywhere, and sailed circles around the tallships with mutual admiration.

The aircraft carrier USS John F. Kennedy was there, as was Theodore the Tug.

Boat owner/bon-vivante Donald Tofias tackes us right through the specator fleet at times...the only boats in the parade to do so. We evoked wild applause from the huge crowds on the shore. We regularly topped 8 knots on a close reach with only the main up. The two boats tacked in unison.

The Japanese had big trouble tacking at the head of the harbor, and needed two tugs to keep from careening into on-lookers near the Bay State Lobster Company. Maybe we got too close.... We'll never know.

What we do know is that we were brusquely confronted by very grumpy Coast Guardsmen, who banished us to the Mystic River for the duration of the afternoon. Undaunted, the good folks from John Hancock whipped out cell phones and arranged for a fleet of company vehicles to pick us up at Charlestown. It was a great day!

Today the Development Office is off to Lou Moses's Canadian hide-away for a two-day retreat. I plan to keep you posted of all happenings.
