Mountain Goats
12/3/2002

Winter arived early to the Blackwater River Valley this week, as temps fell to single numbers at night, and the north wind doth blow. They're making snow over at the ski area, but ski racers met on Carr Field to stretch for their run.

Meanwhile, a new winter afternoon activity headed north up the slopes of Ragged Mountain. Called "Mountain Goats," this intrepid crowd tackles a new outdoor adventure each day: orienteering, cross-country skiing, snowshoeing, building a shelter, etc. Yesterday, they hiked to Mud Pond to prepare a meal out of whatever they happened to have with them.

It turns out that Jiffy Mix, apples, powdered milk, pumpkin spice and some butter fries up into a tasty strudel-like glop that is particularly appealing when it's getting dark and very cold.

They're looking to boost their numbers, so consider this an appeal: STUDENTS--Don't follow the crowd. You could be a Mountain Goat.

Taco likes his new Dartmouth ski racing jacket.
One of Proctor's great natural resources, Mud Pond is frozen two weeks before the solstice.
There was this moment when the stove seemed to be leaking gasoline....
It was like some kind of apple pancake cooked medium rare.
But oh-so-good!
