Sounds of Music
12/21/2005

One of New Hampshire's premier classical musicians, Will Ogmundson will perform a concert on the Yamaha concert grand in the Norris Theater, Saturday, January 7 at 8 PM. The performance will feature Mozart's Sonata XVI in A major K. 300, Schubert's Four Impromptus Opus 90, Bach's Partita No. 1 in B flat, and a sonata by Charles T. Griffes. Tickets ($15 adults; $10 students) should be ordered in advance by calling 603-735-6870 or email Alex Estin. Proceeds go to purchasing a new piano and music supplies for the new recording studio, which will open this winter.

The latest in a series of projects on the east end of campus (including the Wilkins Meeting House and the new Day Care facility,) the new building will be the finest teaching recording studio in the world, with state-of-the-art electronic equipment in rooms that are insulated for sound to the highest standards. "I've never seen anything like this!" observed the project manager recently. "Not only are the walls and ceilings layered with super-thick accoustical sound proofing, but the floors are resting on hundreds of rubber footings that eliminate all external vibration."

Outstanding programs evolve around human talent, energy and vision. We didn't decide to hire Tim Norris because we wanted the finest ski jumping program; we built the finest ski jumping program because Tim was here. (The same is true for Bert Hinkley and kayaking, and dozens of other programs.) When Paul Silverman came to teach music 25 years ago, we built a jazz/rock program and a recording studio to maximize his skills and talents as a teacher. Today, the Director of Music is Bill Wightman, picture below at the Yamaha grand that Will Ogmundson will play January 7:

Completion of the recording studio will attract student musicians to Proctor for decades to come.

This concert is organized and promoted by Bill Wightman and teacher/trustee Everett Jones '57. They envision an on-going series of concerts in the future to benefit the program. Don't forget to call ahead for tickets.....
