Renaissance man
5/25/2001

A young alumnus has gifted a new excellence in teaching award. Seniors vote for the teacher whose talents transcend the classroom... who transformed students' lives on the playing fields, in the dorm, in casual interactions across campus. In yesterday's awards assembly, Steve announced that the first recipient of the Renaissance Teacher Award is John Schoeller. The spontaneous ovation that followed was heartfelt and thunderous.

John, who started at Proctor in 1973, has worked throughout his career on his professional growth, and is recognized as a fine teacher, coach and friend.

A co-ed soccer team comprised of "international" students and faculty (several contestants hail all the way from Lawrence MA) challenged an all-American squad to a soccer showdown yesterday. The outcome is in dispute. Players were cheered by enthusiastic fans, including Melanie McNamara (center, in red)--who is grumpy that she's never in Chuck's Corner--and a few friends:

It all started when Mike Koenig helped daughter Madison do a handstand at the soccer game...
Instantly, copycat behavior was sweeping Farrell Field...
The power of suggestion prompted sympathetic mimicry.
