Leadership Survives.
6/17/2000

Ferries packed with pilgrims always capsize off Sri Lanka or in the mouth of the Ganges. Maybe that's why I was so anxious this afternoon when the Board of Trustees and entire administration set off on the dangerously top-heavy motor vessel Mt. Kearsarge for an evening cruise of potentially challenging Lake Sunapee.

As you can tell from the camera angle,

I was not aboard, opting to ensure some slight continuity of leadership if the worst were to happen. From a distance, the boat seemed out of control at times, although those aboard were oblivious to my concerns on debarkation.

The first survivors to disembark were trustees Gwen and Karl Oppenheim.
The Joint Chiefs of Staff would never get on the same boat. What a relief to see Steve Wilkins emerge under his own power!
Earlier in the day, former Board Chair John Pendleton surveyed a wall with future dreams posted on cards at the retreat named in his honor.
