I climbed the Blackwater today in my annual attempt to get a quality shot of campus in peak foliage. From that distant altitude, how serene...how laconic lies our quaint village campus! If a school resides in this russet valley, surely it must be a place of quiet, serious pursuits....
Then I came down. The "facebooks" had arrived. Here, students flip through the pages. Note that they've got the books upside down.
The Admission Director at a so-called "competitor school" once told me he regretted not being able to sniff out which kids were snowboarders and skateboarders, because he didn't like them. The thought that visiting families might encounter a lad carving turns down a walkway was anathema. If I had my way, of course, every student at Proctor would be on a skateboard.
