Artificial Selection
5/26/2005

While folks who misunderstand the scientific method challenge evolution as "mere theory" in letters to the editor of the Concord Monitor, the fact is that human beings have been artificially selecting plants and animals with desirable characteristics for pollination and fertilization for centuries beyond counting. (Meso-Americans were crafting maize for thousands of years before evolution or creationism were even articulated.) Alan McIntyre's biology classes considered the highly-evolved product of calculated, artificial selection within a species wholly descended from wolves, canus domesticus.

Then we considered gallus gallus, a species differentiatd by man over hundreds of years for three purposes: fighting, bulking up with meat, and laying eggs (and then not caring to sit on them). Here, students listen attentively to....

...to Alan, of course!

Artificial or natural selection? Juniors swarm after assembly to select their class representatives to next year's Student Leadership Board:

A pointer, extensively bred to hunt, Cooper wanders and sniffs. Her ears are long and floppy....a wholly artificial trait selected over centuries.
An Australian cattle dog, Shiva's ancestors probably include dalmatian, border collie and the relatively primative Australian dingo.
In the ceramics studio, Eric selects one of his many creations while working on Senior Project.
A tea pot.
After two years of work, Matt is varnishing a canoe in the final stages of its evolution.
Wilson makes exacting measurements on a table of his own creation in the metal shop.
Chi Chi chooses a precarious perch.
