Surprise me, God.
6/2/2002

For the 23rd time in 25 years, graduation was held outdoors in the natural amphitheater east of Holland Auditorium yesterday. Approximately 1000 guests and friends enjoyed plenty of laughs and a few tears in breezy, sunny Andover.

The highlight of the proceedings were words from the heart by Essayist Tyrell Dortch, relating the extraordinary transition of a young man from Cambridge, Massachusetts over two years at Proctor. With no notes or prepared text, Tyrell took us to his first experiences of rural New England, then Wilderness Orientation, and--eventually--the triumph of his basketball team.

Composer Paul Williams was our guest speaker, and enchanted the crowd with sensitive personal insights. His prayer, "Surprise me, God" (that's the whole text) conveys Paul's sense of wonderment and appreciation of human potential.

Junior Marshalls lead the processional while a brass quartet struggles through Pomp & Circumstance.
The Invocation was delivered by Dean of Students Anne Swayze.
Board Chair Carl Oppenheim reflected on a year of success beyond anyone's expectations.

Singer/composer Paul Williams P'99,'02 delivered the Commencement Address with great humor and personal insight.
