Any complaint that school elections are mere popularity contests was squelched when next year's School Leaders were announced in assembly. I'm not suggesting that Aaron Schlosser and Sarah Wood aren't popular. It's just that neither seeks popularity. Each is a true individual, who communicates real conviction, and who acts on his/her values. Aaron, from Merrimack, MA is a co-founder of the Social Consciousness ("So-Co") Group that meets regularly to identify international injustices and bring them to our attention. Here he is conversing fluently with Janet Linn in French 5:
Now Aaron is organizing dinners to field issues from current students for next year's agenda. On our e-mail NEWS, he writes: "I hope that my role as school leader will be less of a leader and more of an organizer so that the student body can effectively lead itself; I'm not going to pretend as if I can accurately represent 300+ minds.
Who better to represent you than yourself?"
Below, Aaron enjoys a splash of teriaki.
Sarah, a day student from Salisbury, has been leading by example on playing fields, as an Eastern ski racer, and this spring on the softball diamond. Here she is (left) in Advanced Placement English:
Aaron and Sarah are two of the highest achieving students in next year's senior class. We were fortunate to have eleven strong candidates for School Leader this year. Student government in 2002-03 will be deep in talents and motivation.
