Sudden Transformation!
8/21/2012
During my time at Proctor, I have witnessed much physical change to the school: the relocation of the dining room, renovation of Shirley Hall, construction of the Fowler Learning Center (1994), the Wilkins Meeting House (2001) and the recording studio (2004), the construction of eight dormitories and the renovation of eleven others. None of these projects, however, came close to the current turf field project for sudden, dramatic transformation.

For one thing, you watch a building go up over the course of--say--a year. Then you move in. The Farrell Field project, on the other hand, began when students departed for summer vacation. Since then, those of us on campus have watched a lot of earth moved here and there....and then...suddenly lights towers went up and turf is going down. The effect is the total transformation of the center of campus!

Returning students will be absolutely stunned by the difference. In what seems like the blinking of an eye, Proctor has the finest turf complex imaginable.

At first, the height of the light towers is a shock. But the overall effect of the fixtures focussing downward, coupled with the way the north field (field hockey and boys lacrosse) is positioned in front of Burbank House gives the entire complex a feeling of purpose and completion. It is going to look as though the entire site was always meant to be this way.

The "depth" of the turf will be lessened when rubber pellets and sand are introduced to provide the surface a natural, softer and springier feel.
