East and West

The extreme West and East ends of our 2,700-acre property are the sites of two physical improvement projects. By far the grandest of these is the athletics project at Teddy Maloney Rink. Early this summer, the Trustees approved the expenditure of $1,250,000 for the construction of a 7,000 square foot facility featuring six locker rooms with attached bath-and-shower rooms behind a spacious welcoming lobby.

hile the facility will be attached to the south side of the rink, it will serve home and visiting teams fall, winter and spring; (it also provides changing spaces for referees and umpires.) Today, heavy equipment excavated a trench for the extension of eight-inch pipe that will serve sprinkler systems for both the locker facility and the rink itself.

hen our dreams come true, (and it's just a matter of time and money!), this upgrade will have been the first phase of a set of projects that will include new dining and kitchen facilities that will return the existing dining room space to athletics. I will update this page with new images from the project as the demolition of the south wing proceeds.

Meanwhile, on the east shore of Elbow Pond, the under-utilized building known as "Mountain Classroom" (because it serves as a launch pad for our Mountain Classroom expeditions to the American West) is undergoing a significant upgrade as it transitions to a dormitory. While this project, which includes comprehensive improvements to the kitchen, baths, bedrooms, insulation and new decks is prompted by a housing crunch, it is truly a win-win solution. The site and setting at Elbow Pond is too precious....too beautiful....to be ignored.

S
mall trees, brush and dead limbs are being removed to enhance the vistas from what is to become "Elbow Pond Dorm." The ten boys who will be living here have been selected for their maturity and leadership skills. While transportation by shuttle bus may be something of a hassle, they will enjoy life in a dorm that features an extraordinary kitchen and common space, a study room, and the sound of loons. They also have access to a wood-fired sauna and the clean, spring-fed waters of Elbow Pond!
