The fact that astronomical winter begins at 3:00 AM on the twenty-first means very little to us. For students who traveled back to campus Monday, and their teachers, winter begins now. This is a time of transition. This image was taken Sunday.
The young maple in the middle replaces the huge, dying one we removed last spring. The bench Dave Pilla made (towards the left) is constructed from that tree's lumber. here's the same perspective this morning.
Until a few hours ago, the only real snow in town was found on the lower slopes of the Blackwater, where it was made during the cold hours of Saturday night.
Here's a view of the school, from across the valley.
And here's the opposite perspective, from the Johnson House parking area.
This morning:
Here's a good one! In the background....a dusting of snow on thin ice at Elbow Pond. In the foreground...the charred remains of the sauna, which went up in flames two weeks ago! Polar swimmers are highly motivated to see the sauna replaced ASAP....
Now, that's a study in transition!
