Preparations
8/29/2006

Organized preparations for a new school year commence three weeks before classes meet. Eight highly talented new teachers spent last Thursday and Friday in a formal orientation process, with a series of panel discussions.

A tour of campus included a visit to the Development Office.

This morning, Head of School Mike Henriques welcomed the full faculty to meetings that continue Wednesday. A bucket full of coffee grounds could symbolize many things; here it signifies that sustainability guru Nelson Lebo is back.

The value of the June Retreat needs to be shared with the faculty, so music director Bill Wightman led us on his hilarious jazz composition entitled "Sweet Retreat." Lyrics told the whole story: the future of residential life....budgetary realities. Some tried to sing along.

The spirit of service, of giving back to a community, is a commitment we wish to cultivate in every student. To orient ourselves to this value, faculty spent the afternoon painting dorm rooms, weeding gardens, trimming hedges and preparing classroom spaces.

All work and no play is out of the question. Head of School Mike Henriques provokes a spontaneous paint duel with Director of Development Keith Barrett in an upstairs dorm room in Rulon-Miller.
