Another Fourth
7/5/2006

We are interrupting our History of Proctor series for about ten days for some current stuff. Long time readers of this blog know that the Fourth of July brings a predictable taste of Americana to our little village, as thousands swarm the town green. This link will access some previous pages on this topic: Previous Fourths.

This is the image from my office window....

As always, the Kearsarge Community Band entertains us with a set of patriotic tunes and marches.

At noon, a remarkably long parade begins down North Street, while most of the throng awaits it along Main Street. The trick car "Leapin' Lena" is always a crowd favorite.

Andover's famous One Wheelers unicycling team provides the most talent of any of the entries.

Eventually, the parade turns the corner onto Main Street, passing a reviewing stand where local volunteers and politicians describe events to eye witnesses. Here's Leapin' Lena again, this time in front of the Proctor Block.

An extensive flea market sprawls across the Town Green. The crowd picks over tables piled with crafts, books, kitchenware and junk.
Cool, mature alumnae consider a table of accessories.
There is no shortage of foods that one might risk eating: sausage, hot dogs, fries, fried onions, ice cream....
Kat Darling enjoys the scene from the steps of the Chapel, armed with a hot Italian sausage with onions and green peppers.
