What to do?

The final weekend of the year is "closed," meaning that all boarders are on-campus to prepare for finals and start cleaning up dorm rooms. To keep everyone entertained, we offer a wide variety of activities. The area south of the dining room was the site of a veritable field day, with live music. James and Santiago can keep a lot of balls in the air:

The activities tend to have an international flavor. These young ladies are playing dreidel with M&Ms.

These kids are frying plantains, mashing them in a press, and then frying them a bit more for a delicious, Latin-American snack.

Manchester, England natives Jack Minister and Phill Wait organized a student cricket team to play a faculty squad captained by Aussie Rick Browner. An official report--written from the faculty perspective--is posted at the bottom of this page. Here, Jack bowls to Lee Carvalho on the pitch.

These four guys hiked up to The Cabin for Saturday night.

We finish with Rick Browner's report on the cricket match. Remember, this is written in English. Good luck making sense of it....

Phill won the toss and elected to send the opposition in on a rather sticky wicket from the overnight rain. Conditions were perfect with Gary Peters having prepared a fine pitch with plenty of grass to help the quick bowlers. The faculty team was in immediate difficulties with the loss of two quick wickets without having troubled the scorer, except for two bonus wides. The score was a dismal 2 for 2 until Greg Allan steadied the ship and moved the team on to double figures before his dismissal from a dodgy Yorker that trapped him leg before wicket. Patty Pond was the next to go after an appalling lack of etiquette from Phill who stumped her while laughing maniacally. Poor Patty didn’t know the rule and the desperation apparent from the student team was palpable. A steady stream of wickets tumbled, the faculty not being helped by the umpire’s clear lack of knowledge of the rules. Eric went for a golden duck on his debut to the crease and left the field muttering something about not playing these rules in France. Some intimidating tactics such as crowding at silly mid on and square leg, as well as some pinpoint bowling by Gentleman Jack saw the faculty team dismissed in their first innings for 27 runs. Phill led his team to the wicket and immediately started pasting the lackluster faculty bowing attack, hitting a few boundaries in his long innings. Mercifully he retired on his quarter century to let his teammates continue the route. Kinley fell to a devastating full toss from his Grandfather when it ripped middle stump out of the ground and for a while there the faculty hopes soared with the departure to the pavilion of the dangerous left-hander. Unfortunately it was a short-lived experience because Gentleman Jack proceeded to give the faculty attack a bath. He lofted the ball for two sixes and multiple fours before being dismissed by a spectacular catch by Lee who dropped it. It was close enough in the umpires opinion and Gentleman Jack, true to the great tradition of sportsmanship in cricket, turned and walked. The tail did not wag for the students, however it proved to be enough and at the end of their innings led by 71 runs to 27 and may be forced to follow on by the hard pommy captain. The second innings will get underway sometime next year and the faculty team is in preseason training for their certain victory in the inaugural Faculty/Student cricket match. Thank you to all who turned out.
