Tennis Follies

Tennis is a sport steeped in tradition, gentility and etiquette. A highly successful girls' junior varsity team chose to wear whites to matches this spring.

At the high school level, a basic strategy is to keep the ball in play with conservative returns that force the opponent to reciprocate.

The boys' junior varsity is undefeated at the JV level (having lost to one varsity team.) Even in practice, Ryan sports a Proctor tennis shirt.

When an Introdution to Literature class uses a "tennis match" for inspiration (they will be writing poems about the experience tonight,) the rules and protocols of tennis suffer. Perhaps Charlie and Adam will put the experience of gloating into verse....

Between games, one strides around the outside of the court, pausing for water and a towel, perhaps. But that's real tennis....

Heidi uses finesse on this well-placed overhand.
Betsy displays a classic backhand.
Nick approaches the forehand with a full stride....
and completes the stroke with a topspin follow through.
Jack's game, however, depends on distraction.
In Intro to Lit, Greg improvises a two-handed backhand.
Perhaps Charlie's poem will reference his behind-the-back shot.
Certainly, Will's verse will capture this moment of intense disappointment and regret.
Or the sensation of a tennis ball striking the body at 100 miles per hour (the shot was long....)
Indeed, the brand of tennis played by this English class caused lots of anguish and pain.
