With Bonus Weekend starting Friday at noon, halloween was observed Thursday. Here's Sarah swinging a corn stalk at a hunk of pumpkin pitched by Charlie. This is a messy sport for the catcher.

A mild, sunny afternoon was perfect for a science field trip to nearby Philbrick-Cricenti Bog. Here, an ancient pond now supports immense mats of floating sphagnum and sedge.

Bonus weekend is a three-day break. With no games Saturday, Thursday afternoon was a good time for team community service projects. An undefeated girls varsity soccer team helped spruce up the pre-school, and enjoyed the slide.

The prospect of three days apart is enough to prompt emotional good-byes at the bus Friday at noon.

Sapling poles sunk in the floating sphagnum mat make it possible to check the depth of the bog.
Cotton grass and pitcher plants thrive in the high-acid environment. Tamaracks--deciduous conifers--show yellow needles along the shoreline.
The fieldtrip is a lab, with students working in pairs to observe and document specific qualities of the bog environment.
Sam completes some paperwork on a rock near the shore.
Goodbye until Monday night!
Beastie is so out of here!
