Schools differ greatly in their policies regarding dorm visitation. Some prohibit students from returning to their own rooms during class hours (forget about guests). Others simply prohibit boy/girl dorm visits, or orchestrate specific moments during the week when such co-ed visits are allowed. Contrasted to these measures, Proctor's "parietal" policies are relatively permissive: 6:15-7:55 PM with dorm parent permission, etc. The 6:15 PM start is a new policy, and it's not popular with returning students. Student leaders are (very appropriately) requesting reconsideration by the full faculty.

Today's whole school assembly featured a clever skit in which Nathan--a boy away from campus for the fall term on Ocean Classroom--returns to find immense bureaucratic red tape, forms, and chaperones necessary in order to visit his girlfriend, Cheryl. It was a smart spoof of our very real attempts to find the best balance of freedom and responsibility for teenage boys and girls.

Another ten families visited Proctor today, looking for the subtle differences that make one school more or less appropriate for the child. They saw Proctor on a very typical day.

"Nathan" (right) returns from fall term on Ocean Classroom to encounter a member of the campus's new Propriety Police--armed with flashlights, cell phone, and plenty of forms to fill out.
Forms completed, Nathan and Cheryl--with chaperone in place and hands safely protected--enjoy their brief visit by touching.
